Top things to do after your Adjustment with Bespoke!

In the previous blog about movement you would have read that chiropractic adjustments can help to improve or restore motion to the joints of the spine. This is turn allows more normal motion and function of the spine which may improve mobility, flexibility and endurance.

So what else can you do after your appointment to help your body process the adjustments you’ve just had?

GO FOR A WALK

We know that movement is important and by going for a walk after your adjustment your brain and body will start to learn the restored patterns of motion in your spine. Walking also helps improve your posture and may increase circulation to your spine. It doesn’t have to be a long walk, just a few minutes before you jump in your car.

DRINK PLENTY OF WATER

Water is so important to keep us hydrated and flush out toxins. Our spinal discs also need water to stay hydrated and seeing as they act as the “shock absorbers” for our spine it’s really important they have adequate water to do their job. Dehydration may cause decreased mobility, flexibility and potentially pain so aim to drink at least 2 litres per day, more if you drink coffee, are doing exercise or have a physically strenuous job. Don’t like that much plain water? Try adding fruit/vegetables to your water (cucumber is a personal favourite) or try a herbal tea (amazing chilled with ice now the weather is warming up).

DECREASE THE AMOUNT OF TIME YOU’RE SITTING

Sitting for long periods can have negative effects on your overall health, not just your posture and spinal health. We are simply not designed to sit for long periods. Try to get up and move/stretch every 20 minutes - setting a timer is a great reminder. It is important to try to find ways to incorporate moving and walking into your everyday routine. If you don’t have the luxury of a sit-to-stand desk at work you could take your work calls while standing/moving in your office space, try to get outside for a quick walk on your lunch break or take the stairs when you can.

INCREASE REST AND SLEEP TO DECREASE STRESS

Stress, whether physical, mental or emotional has a huge impact on our health. If you want to read more about the effects and how to potentially counteract them see these blog articles Stress and The Nervous System and Stress and the Nervous System Part 2

I know it’s easier said than done in today’s hectic world but try to relax after your adjustments. Take some deep breaths as this helps calm the nervous system and switch from “fight and flight” into “rest and digest”. Our body heals when we sleep so try to get to bed a bit earlier and rest on weekends/days off … there is nothing wrong with a nap!!
